Promises to Abram^(A)

12 Now the ^(B)Lord had said to Abram:

⁴ So Abram departed as the Lord had spoken to him, and Lot went with him. And Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. ⁵ Then Abram took Sarai his wife and Lot his brother’s son, and all their possessions that they had gathered, and ^(J)the ^[a]people whom they had acquired ^(K)in Haran, and they ^(L)departed to go to the land of Canaan. So they came to the land of Canaan. ⁶ Abram ^(M)passed through the land to the place of Shechem, ^(N)as far as ^[b]the terebinth tree of Moreh. ^(O)And the Canaanites were then in the land.

^7 (P)Then the Lord appeared to Abram and said, ^(Q)“To your ^[c]descendants I will give this land.” And there he built an ^(R)altar to the Lord, who had appeared to him. ⁸ And he moved from there to the mountain east of Bethel, and he pitched his tent with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east; there he built an altar to the Lord and ^(S)called on the name of the Lord. ⁹ So Abram journeyed, ^(T)going on still toward the ^[d]South.

Jacob’s Vow at Bethel

¹⁰ Now Jacob ^(A)went out from Beersheba and went toward ^(B)Haran. ¹¹ So he came to a certain place and stayed there all night, because the sun had set. And he took one of the stones of that place and put it at his head, and he lay down in that place to sleep. ¹² Then he ^(C)dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven; and there ^(D)the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.

^13 (E)And behold, the Lord stood above it and said: ^(F)“I am the Lord God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; ^(G)the land on which you lie I will give to you and your descendants. ¹⁴ Also your ^(H)descendants shall be as the dust of the earth; you shall spread abroad ^(I)to the west and the east, to the north and the south; and in you and ^(J)in your seed all the families of the earth shall be blessed. ¹⁵ Behold, ^(K)I am with you and will ^(L)keep^[a] you wherever you go, and will ^(M)bring you back to this land; for ^(N)I will not leave you ^(O)until I have done what I have spoken to you.”

¹⁶ Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely the Lord is in ^(P)this place, and I did not know it.” ¹⁷ And he was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven!”

¹⁸ Then Jacob rose early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put at his head, ^(Q)set it up as a pillar, ^(R)and poured oil on top of it. ¹⁹ And he called the name of ^(S)that place ^[b]Bethel; but the name of that city had been Luz previously. ^20 (T)Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If ^(U)God will be with me, and keep me in this way that I am going, and give me ^(V)bread to eat and clothing to put on, ²¹ so that ^(W)I come back to my father’s house in peace, ^(X)then the Lord shall be my God. ²² And this stone which I have set as a pillar ^(Y)shall be God’s house, ^(Z)and of all that You give me I will surely give a ^[c]tenth to You.”

^4 (A)There are ^[a]diversities of gifts, but ^(B)the same Spirit. ^5 (C)There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. ⁶ And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God ^(D)who works ^[b]all in all. ⁷ But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: ⁸ for to one is given ^(E)the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another ^(F)the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, ^9 (G)to another faith by the same Spirit, to another ^(H)gifts of healings by ^[c]the same Spirit, ^10 (I)to another the working of miracles, to another ^(J)prophecy, to another ^(K)discerning of spirits, to another ^(L)different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. ¹¹ But one and the same Spirit works all these things, ^(M)distributing to each one individually ^(N)as He wills.

Unity and Diversity in One Body^(O)

¹² For ^(P)as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, ^(Q)so also is Christ. ¹³ For ^(R)by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—^(S)whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and ^(T)have all been made to drink ^[d]into one Spirit. ¹⁴ For in fact the body is not one member but many.

¹⁵ If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I am not of the body,” is it therefore not of the body? ¹⁶ And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I am not of the body,” is it therefore not of the body? ¹⁷ If the whole body were an eye, where would be the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where would be the smelling? ¹⁸ But now ^(U)God has set the members, each one of them, in the body ^(V)just as He pleased. ¹⁹ And if they were all one member, where would the body be?

²⁰ But now indeed there are many members, yet one body. ²¹ And the eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you”; nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” ²² No, much rather, those members of the body which seem to be weaker are necessary. ²³ And those members of the body which we think to be less honorable, on these we bestow greater honor; and our unpresentable parts have greater modesty, ²⁴ but our presentable parts have no need. But God composed the body, having given greater honor to that part which lacks it, ²⁵ that there should be no ^[e]schism in the body, but that the members should have the same care for one another. ²⁶ And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; or if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.

²⁷ Now ^(W)you are the body of Christ, and ^(X)members individually. ²⁸ And ^(Y)God has appointed these in the church: first ^(Z)apostles, second ^(AA)prophets, third teachers, after that ^(AB)miracles, then ^(AC)gifts of healings, ^(AD)helps, ^(AE)administrations, varieties of tongues. ²⁹ Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of miracles? ³⁰ Do all have gifts of healings? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? ³¹ But ^(AF)earnestly desire the ^[f]best gifts. And yet I show you a more excellent way.
